Things have calmed down somewhat, and I am feeling a bit better, and a little more optimistic about life. Thanks for everyone who commented and helped me feel better.
This morning, just as I thought, I awoke to the sounds of both kids in Thomas' crib. But Zaylee wasn't beating up on Thomas at all, and she had slept dry. Then the day took a turn for the very much worse when I heard Zaylee talking to the little "cater-killer" she had found in the hallway. It turned out to be a maggot.
I ran out to the hallway and discovered about seven maggots squirming around on the carpet! Oh no! So I grabbed the vacuum and sucked them up, then went searching for the source. The first place I looked, of course, was the kitchen garbage can. But there were no maggots there. Nor were there any in the kitchen or dining room at all.
By the time I had checked the kitchen and dining room, there were several more maggots squirming around in the hallway, so I was back on vacuum duty for several minutes. I would get rid of all the visible maggots, then look around and discover that one or two more had suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Where were they coming from?!
As I watched and vacuumed, to my horror I discovered that these maggots were creeping up from inside the carpet itself. That meant that there were an unknowable number of maggots squirming around under my very feet! At this point I woke up Jeff.
I'm going to cut this story short, because it's becoming a bit lengthier than I intended. Basically, we decided to get some bug spray. So I left Jeff at home with the kids and the trusty vacuum cleaner, and I headed out to do our weekly shopping. I'll talk a little more about that later. But anyway, I bought bug spray and we sprayed the hallway carpet thoroughly. We had to block the entrance to the hall with chairs to keep the kids out, because they are instinctively drawn to things that can harm them, like bug spray on carpet.
We're hoping that takes care of this problem. Since spraying, we haven't seen any more maggots. But if we do, we still have a LOT of bug spray left, so I say to them, bring it on!! Actually, no - don't bring it on. Go away.
Okay, back to grocery shopping. After spending lots of money, mostly on food, I brought home my spoils and started adding things up. As of this trip, we now have our one month supply of food storage! Hooray! That's a pretty big thing for us. One down, eleven to go.
Since I'm so excited about this, and proud of what we've been able to do so far, here's what we have in our food storage:
- 80 pounds of grains
- 28.5 pounds of beans and peanut butter
- 33 pounds of sugar
- 1.5 pounds of salt
- 76.5 quarts of dairy
- 9 pounds of fat
- 16.5 pounds of meat
- 92.5 pounds of fruits and vegetables
I'm so amazed and excited that we've been able to fit this much food into our tiny apartment, and proud that we've stuck with it so far. It feels good to know that we are following the counsel of latter day prophets and preparing our family for the future.

I'm so impressed with your food storage!! I have...uhmmmm...formula and juice, baby cereal, cold cereal, 'some' powdered milk, lots of grain (like pasta, oatmeal and some wheat), and I think that's about it. Oh, wait, and 1/2 dozen jars of cherries and 1 dozen jars of applesauce. Yours will definately last you guys longer...better get myself on the ball here.
Sorry about your maggot problem. For me it's the fruit flies that I can't keep up with. (And I don't even have any fruit on the counter anymore.) Good luck with that spray!
EWWWW more maggots. Hopefully they're gone for good this time. Great job with the food storage.
Oh gross! That totally sucks! Maybe borrow Mom's steam cleaner, use REALLY hot water in it, mixing rubbing alcohol in with the water. It might help... My friend uses it in her machine and it doesn't fade the carpets at all.
That is terrible....ick! Glad you are armed with spray! :)
I would love to know how you are figuring out how much to buy of what and where y ou store it. If you would like to pass along info, I would LOVE to receive it!
Any chance the landlord would replace the carpet? It's worth a try. Good work on the food storage. We are at the point where we coasted for awhile and now I see several items that we are almost out of and I don't find them coming on sale. Keep up the good work
