It starts with a little pressure, and if I don't take something quick, it turns into an immense pounding pain in one temple. If the room is too bright, it gets worse. If there's noise anywhere, it gets worse. If there's a funny smell, it gets worse. When it gets really bad, I get nauseous and my stomach hurts...which makes my head hurt worse. Basically, I get really bad migraines.
Yesterday evening I had one.
What I wanted to do was take a whole bottle of Ibuprofen, lay down in my bed with the door locked, the lights off, and a pillow over my head, slowly choking me into unconsciousness. What I had to do was make dinner. It was after 5:00, and Jeff hadn't come home yet. The kids were hungry, and when they're hungry they're fussy. And noisy. I had to make the noise stop.

So I threw together some hot tuna salad and flatbread, all the while trying to ignore the hammer slamming itself repeatedly into the side of my head. Man, that hammer was annoying. I made up a little ditty that I sang to myself over and over. The tune is from Dr. Horrible's Sing-along Blog.
A mom's gotta do what a mom's gotta do,
That's why I'm standing here making dinner for you,
Even though this migraine's slowly pounding me to death,
So please give me a sec to catch my breath.
Not bad, huh?
Jeff came home while dinner was baking. Oh joy, oh reprieve! I smiled brightly and let him know that he was now in charge.

He kept the kids under control while I threw myself dramatically (though gently - rough movements make the pain worse) onto the couch. I stayed there through dinner, unable to get up because of that stupid hammer and my slowly-starting-to-ache stomach. After the kids were fed, though, Jeff woke me from my pain-induced stupor to tell me he had to leave for an appointment. I was alone with the kids again. I got them out of their booster seats and sat them in front of the computer with Homestar Runner to entertain them. I choked down some dinner, knowing that sometimes eating helps the migraine to go away. Then it was back onto the couch for the rest of the evening. Jeff had to put the kids to bed by himself.
By the time I staggered to bed at 10:00, the hammer had slowed down, and wasn't hitting me quite so hard. And when I got up this morning, the pain was gone. But talking, writing, or even thinking about a migraine tends to give me a migraine, so I'd better end this post now. I'm starting to feel that little bit of pressure right behind my eye...

wow, i rarely get sick, i cant even dream how bad it hurts. so, not knowing if you have, is there a medical condition that could cause it or can people just get headaches all the time like that? crazy, and sure sucks. Glad you feel better.
Migraines tend to be hereditary. My mom gets them and passed them on to two of my sisters and one of my brothers. And me. Lucky us! :-)
I used to get them like that ALL the time! Cutting out all artificial sweeteners helped a ton... like a ton!!! I rarely get them now.
You poor thing! Isn't it great when hubbies can take over for a bit? I was grateful for mine today...I got to go to the grocery ALONE! May migraines leave you alone for a bit longer!
I have found that as I get older they don't come as much. I don't know, maybe it's that my schedule is way too busy to allow monster headaches like that. Or the Lord knows that I can't take them very often when I have the children I do.... Glad you are feeling better though!
Wow, when they say "A picture's worth a thousand words"... well let's just say you picked all the right pictures! I sure hope you are feeling better soon.
totally funn-in a not so funny way. You certainly said it all just right! I am glad you are feeling better today. Hope it stays that way!
Your post was fun to read, but I'm so sorry to hear about your hottible migraine. Jordan gets those sometimes, and it's no fun. Hope it's a LONG time before you have another one......
Hey girl! I get migraines, too, so I totally know how you feel! What meds. do you take? I was prescribed "Maxalt" yrs. ago and it works really well. Even if you have had the migraine for awhile, if you take the maxalt, it will help the migraine go away w/in a couple of hrs. or so. It brings relief, for sure!
I have found that mine are triggered by hormones (big surprise, huh) and skipping eating (like if I don't have breakfast and wait till late afternoon to eat).
I hope you are feeling better! Btw, even tho you didn't feel good, your post was very funny!!! :)
Take Care, girl!!!
I feel your pain. I used to get migraines all the time and was on medication for them. Luckily I rarely get them anymore and have some powerful medicine for when I do. I did have to spend one Thanksgiving in the ER because of a migraine. Mine are usually seasonally related. I tend to get more of them in the winter.
